2017 Populis Wabi-Sabi Red

2017 Populis Wabi-Sabi Red

Wabi-sabi is a beauty of things imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. It is a beauty of things modest and humble. It is a beauty of things unconventional. The 2017 Populis “Wabi-Sabi” Red Blend was born from the desire to create a lighthearted, naturally made, extremely drinkable wine from exciting vineyard sites throughout California. We partner with organic farmers who work with quality in mind, many of whom dry-farm historic, old vine vineyards.

Varieties: Carignane (45%), Syrah (25%), Zinfandel (20%), and Cabernet Franc (10%)

Production: 626 cases

This blend of four varieties hails from some of our favorite organically farmed vineyard sites in Mendocino County and the Sierra Foothills. Containing a mixture of sandstone, shale and quartz, the deep, well drained soils of Mendocino were formed from alluvial flows, depositing fist-sized stones along the way. Highly deficient in organic matter, the moderately acidic soil pH allows for optimal nutrient uptake to allow the vines to thrive.

Vines range in age from 20 to 70 years and are farmed organically 3rd and 4th generation farmers.

Each component of this blend was made with the intention of creating a dynamic blend meant to enhance the character of each individual variety. Partial whole cluster for structure and tannin, partially destemmed for mid-palate depth; this wine has a bit of everything. 100% Native yeast fermentation. Unfined. Unfiltered.

Tasting Notes:

Everyday drinking wines are a mainstay of Europe and we paid homage to those blends in a uniquely Californian way. This wine has the backbone and rusticity of Italy and Southern France with the pop of fruit that only California brings to the table. Fine tannins finish off an experience that is great alone or with an array of dinner and lunch choices.
